Education as a Core Value

Jim worked full-time throughout his college experience. He worked during the day, ran to school at night and crammed his homework in along the way. Education is a core value for Jim. He was one of the first in his family on his Mom's side to earn a college degree and the only one with an advanced degree.

A hockey player in his youth, school was never much of a priority. It wasn't, that is, until he left the Marine Corps without too many career prospects and began working as an electrician's apprentice at minimum wage. Now, Jim jokes that the only tool he really needed for that job was a shovel and a strong back.

He realized that in order to improve his job prospects he had to improve his education. Since returning to college as an adult, he worked hard, gave up many outside interests, and devoted himself to his studies. He did so while balancing the demands of a full-time job (and sometimes a part-time job too, to pay the bills) along with the needs of his family.

Doctoral Research

Jim's doctoral research examined the ways that nurses who were managers affected the nurses they supervised. Due to the nursing crisis, Jim studied whether the healthcare industry might retain good nurses by improving morale among nurses through good management and good leadership.
