Jim Long for ND Senate

Appearances

Jim and his running mates are already off to a good start. They are participating in many community events throughout District 14 this summer. Look for them in your own community. If you would like to make them aware of events in your town, email them at askjimlong@jimlongforndsenate.com

  • Chili Feed at Festival Hall

    September 21, 2008
Jim, Bob, and Karen spoke to the good folks in District 14 at a "Meet the Candidates Chili-Feed" at Festival Hall in Fessenden. Along with the District 14 candidates, Max Laird and Merle Boucher addressed the crowd. Silent and live auctions raised funds for the candidates' campaign.

The Master of Ceremonies was Senator Ryan Taylor from District 7. Taylor, a member of the North Dakota Stockmen's Association, noted that he and Jim had some similarities. Jim has quarter horses and Ryan has quarter horses. Jim has a '54 Chevy pickup and Ryan has a '51 Chevy pickup. However, the senator noted that the difference is, "When Jim attends a parade, he drives his pickup and I ride my horse. I don't know if that means his pickup is more reliable than his horse, or if my horse is more reliable than my pickup."

We suspect Ryan was right on both counts!

Stay tuned - the speeches were recorded. We hope to have them on YouTube soon!

  • Wing celebration and parade

    July 19
The candidates were in Wing, ND on July 19th. They met a lot of good folks, handed out buckets of candy during the parade, and even picked up a few souvenirs at the fair afterwards.

The Wing Horse Club had a great turnout. Jim and Kim's favorite float, a beautifully restored John Deere M, was driven by Leonard - a new friend they met at the event.

Old Highway 10 is becoming a regular route for Jim and Kim in the '54! The highway has led them to each community they've visited over the past three weekends.

  • Robinson, ND Parade July 12

    July 12

After the parade in Steele, the team headed north to Robinson, North Dakota. There, they participated in another hometown celebration. Although it didn't seem like it would be possible, the winds increased between the Steele parade in the morning and the Robinson parade in the afternoon.

Jim had a special treat - he met up with Lee and Penny Hetletved, of Hetletved Quarter Horses who bred Jim's horse, Rolling Sugar Bars, the pretty roan filly on the homepage of this website. (Click here to see her sire). Lee was riding a young red-roan colt in the parade. Jim knew instantly it was a Hetletved Horse and caught up with them for a short visit.

Once the team for District 14 hit the main crowd, they got a little too busy shaking hands and handing out candy to keep up with the old '54. Jim was forced to hitch a ride in a mustang convertible with some very young, attractive women to catch up with his wife driving the old truck.

When he caught up with her, Jim said, "Honey, there are some important sacrifices to be made when running for state senate. Riding around in new convertibles with attractive women is just one of those hardships."

  • Steele, ND Parade July 12

    July 12, 2008

Jim, Bob, and Karen took part in the parade in Steele, North Dakota on July 12th. The route was full of District 14 residents who lined the streets to see the many antique tractors, a very nice float sponsored by BEK Communications, the old '54 with our candidates, and a fantastic '67 chevy. Bob Stringer fell behind near the end of the parade route (shaking too many hands, he claims) and hitched aboard a beautiful Farmall.

The weather was uncooperative - winds were high and the air was brisk. Kim (Long) and Ron (Volk) took it easy riding in the cab while the candidates worked hard! Since Jim installed new rear shocks on the old truck Friday night, the ride was smoooooth. (Photos to follow soon).

  • Driscoll 125th Celebration

    July 5, 2008

Jim and Kim put the '54 on its first "road test" of any length since it was rebuilt. They drove from Lincoln to Driscoll to participate in the Driscoll 125th Celebration on July 5th. To their delight, it operated at full highway speed (55 mph) without incident for the whole trip.

All three Longs (including Ebby the family dog) were in Driscoll for the big event. Unfortunately, the parade was cancelled so the Longs enjoyed the town sights and explored the town families' histories at the cemetery before heading home to feed the horses.

Watch for Bob Stringer in the Sykeston parade and Karen Volk in the Harvey parade. More photos and updates to follow.

  • Mandan Rodeo Days Parade

    July 4, 2008

Jim and Kim took part in the Mandan Rodeo Days Parade. The old '54 made it through the whole parade without incident, but a few wise elders suggested from the sidelines that they should "keep it running!"  Candidate for Governor, Tim Mathern, even jumped on the running boards and rode a few blocks with Jim and Kim.

Click here to see Jim and the '54 in the parade, along with a terrific gallery of photos of the whole event!

  • Wells County Fair Parade

    June 28, 2008

Jim, Bob, and Karen participated in the Wells County Fair Parade held in Fessenden, ND on June 28th. Their float was Kim & Jim's old '54 Chevy truck. Jim's wife Kim drove, Kim's sister Melissa (a senior at the University of Mary) rode shotgun, and Ebby, the family dog, rode in the middle.

A few moments of excitement happened when the old truck threatened to stall just before the parade began. Fortunately, it roared back to life after a few tense moments. Bob Stringer, a Ford man, helpfully suggested that next time, they should bring the '46 Ford instead!

The candidates tossed candy and germicidal wet-wipes out to the crowd. Karen, a public health nurse, wanted to ensure that the children were able to enjoy a safe, germ-free day after gathering candy off the parade route.
